Even though this generation of Marines came about 20 years after my own, I’m very happy to see the process was still pretty much the same. I will also say that this is one of the beat documentaries that I have seen of the dozens that I have watched. Semper Fi!

Our DI's used to make us do mountain climbers and bend and thrust on the quarterdeck for so long that we'd have pools of sweat underneath us. Once I had my boot hit that sweat and my leg shot straight out causing my knee to hit the deck hard. I was laying there grabbing my knee and the DI was kicking me to get back into position. Of course, that was back when they the DI's were allowed to get away with striking a recruit. I went through PI in late Aug '77. Then there was doing PT in the "Rose Garden" which was simply grass with lots of sandspurs. Those sandspurs would be driven into every part of your body and your hands would be bloody. Of course there were sand fleas, the DI's would not allow us to swat, slap or scratch the sand fleas that were biting our necks and ears. We would stand there at attention until we heard the command "ATTACK" which would allow us a few precious seconds to wipe out the sand fleas until we heard the next command "RECOVER" which put us back at attention once again. Those were the days.

My Grandfather 2nd LT Robert C. B. Sherry was a Raider, a "plank owner" or original member of Company B 2nd Battalion. He led the fight in Makin, Guadalcanal, Bougainville. He was assigned headquarters 2nd battalion 27th, when was KIA on D-Day on the beach at Iwo Jima. He was a Sergeant, Radioman and had been given a battlefield commission to 2nd lieutenant when he died.

"PERMITS" saluting? Can now "legally" render salutes????? Screw that. You could never stop any veteran from saluting if they choose.

I think the law is more about the random karens that harass ununiformed military 🪖 for saluting the flag, and stolen valor issues.

Big thing to remember is that the vast majority of Drill Instructors really do care. I was in the Army, not Marines, but I still remember running into one of my Drill Sergeants seven years later on the line. I'd fast-tracked promotions and was a Staff Sergeant by then. I remember he saw my rank and just started smiling ear-to-ear, like a proud father who saw his son graduate. We had a chance to catch up for an hour or so before our convoys had to roll (we ran into each other at FOB Hammer). He grabbed a quick picture to share with my other Drill Sergeants and within a week I'd been emailed by bother of them wanting to congratulate me and catch up on my career. Not all Drills are like this, but a lot of them are. As a former NCO, I get it. When I look at my two guys that have stayed in the military and are now well past where I was in rank (one is now a SFC and the other a MSG), I feel so much pride. Not in myself so much, but in them and everything they've done in the Army. I remember them as scared privates, newly arrived to their first unit and fresh out of Basic. Now they are senior NCO's, confidently running a platoon and the operations section for a cavalry squadron. It's as close to being a father as you can get without actually having a kid.

Not really a fair example of the Humvee rolling over. at 0:15 you can see the flipper extended out to roll the vehicle over for the test. However, in real life the truck would not have even rolled over to begin with. So sure, if you roll it it's going to fall apart....but you have to actually roll it first and these trucks are VERY difficult to roll.

40 years since ... You get off the bus and plant your feet in the golden footprints. Spend 2-3 days in receiving and then pick up your Drill Instructors. The first day after that was... eye opening <g>. You WILL spend time on the quarter desk.... in The Pit... in The Rose Garden (no roses - just thorns, recruit...). "What are you doing slapping at those sand fleas?!? YOU got to eat...." And the ever popular "YOU! On the quarterdeck - pushups! Do 'em until I get tired!" We weren't laughing about it then but I can smile now.

Best choice one of my nephews ever made; go to a juvie school, or get in shape and do early enlistment at 17. Grandpa got him a personal trainer, a Marine veteran, and the deal was he shows every morning, on time, leaves his attitude that got him into trouble on the shelf, and gives it his all. (Late or bad attitude even once, Grandpa calls the court and he goes to juvie.) He made it every day, joined Marines on a waiver, turned 18 a week after graduation. Did two tours in Iraq, got business degree, owns five gyms with his wife, has six kids who won’t be falling into their Dad’s mistakes. (And if any do, it’ll be nipped in the bud immediately!)

I am aware that this video is 15 years old but then as now this is the kind of horseshit the congress and potus waste the American taxpayer’s dollar on. At the time this was occurring there was a recession of pretty epic proportions going on. Why weren’t they doing anything about that. Oh yea congress was too busy maneuvering to get obummer elected and further sell our great nation down the river. As my fellow veterans have stated I do not need the federal government to tell me when and where to render a salute to whomever or what ever I damned well please. Semper Fidelis SSgt B.
